The Saskatoon Fire Department was kept busy in the early hours of Friday morning.
In addition to the fire at a tire recycling facility north of the city, Saskatoon firefighters responded to five fires in garbage or recycling bins and one in a house that was under construction, all between 2:30 a.m. and 5:45 a.m.
In a media release, the fire department said it dealt with a household recycling bin on fire in the 900 block of Avenue J South at 2:30 a.m., another recycling bin on fire in the 900 block of Avenue J South at 4:37 a.m., a commercial garbage bin on fire in the 1400 block of Avenue M South at 5:30 a.m. and two more commercial garbage bins on fire in the 1400 block of Wellington Street at 5:41 a.m.
Firefighters had each fire under control within 10 minutes of arrival. The department’s release said all five fires are considered to be suspicious in nature.
At 4:10 a.m., firefighters responded to a 911 call that a home under construction at 1247 Ave. J South was on fire.
It took 70 minutes to bring the blaze under control.
“A fire investigator has concluded the on-scene investigation and has found the fire to be accidental in nature, originating near an electrical box in the basement,” the fire department said in another release. “Damage has been estimated at $200,000.”
There weren’t any injuries reported.
