BIEL, Switzerland — Canada’s Bianca Andreescu will play for the first time in more than three months this week during a Fed Cup qualifier against host Switzerland.
The reigning U.S. Open champion was confirmed as a participant in the best-of-five tie at a draw ceremony Thursday.
The Canada-Switzerland winner advances to the inaugural Fed Cup Finals in Budapest in April.
Andreescu, ranked sixth in the world, has been out with a left knee injury since late October.
The addition of Andreescu gives Canada its lone top-100 singles player.
Switzerland features world No. 5 Belinda Bencic, No. 68 Jil Teichmann, No. 93 Viktorija Golubic, No. 99 Stefanie Voegele and No. 269 Timea Bacsinszky.
Canada also has No. 185 Leylah Annie Fernandez of Laval, Que., No. 267 Eugenie Bouchard of Westmount, Que., and No. 448 Gabriela Dabrowski of Ottawa. Dabrowski is the top-ranked doubles player in the tie at No. 7.
Andreescu is set to play in a doubles match alongside Dabrowski, playing against Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic and Stefanie Voegele.
An announcement by Fed Cup said players for the doubles match can still be swapped up to an hour before the game.
The tie features four singles matches and one doubles contest.
