The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have made their call.
Zach Collaros will get starter’s money going into the 2020 CFL season. Matt Nichols, who missed time with a shoulder injury last season, is no longer considered the starter in the Manitoba capital after five seasons.
Collaros, who joined the Bombers on Oct. 9, won four regular-season games and three playoff games to lead the Bombers to their first championship in nearly three decades. With the news of the Collaros signing earlier this week, Nichols experiences a cruel reality of sport.
If healthy, Nichols is going to be a good option for another team this coming season. Nichols, Ryan Dinwiddie and Jacques Chapdelaine might make for a strong offence in Toronto. It’s always hard to know how free agency will play out, but Nichols does deserve a meaningful shot somewhere in this league if he’s 100 per cent.
As for the Bombers, they’ve put their faith in a 31-year-old quarterback who strung just seven wins together in 2019. That’s a move that hardly ensures a repeat trip to the championship game in 2020.
