The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have made their move.
It’s Zach Collaros’ team now. They’re paying good money to keep their Grey Cup Championship quarterback and taking a pass on Matt Nichols.
With Chris Streveler reportedly getting interest from the NFL, it’ll be Collaros and … we’re not quite sure in Winnipeg.
Why?
It’s quite simple. Nichols’ and Collaros’ injury lists are of similar length, and Collaros did in four weeks what Nichols couldn’t: He won a championship.
You could argue that Nichols could have won, which I believe he could have but he didn’t. Plus, Nichols injuries are to his shoulder. While he says he’s full strength, the bombers may not be so sure and if you can’t throw, you won’t win.
The Bombers have one of the best offensive lines in the league to keep Collaros from taking those big hits, and he did get up from a few in his four starts.
Is it a gamble? Maybe.
But when your options include a championship quarterback who is only 31, you stick with the winner.
