This is my annual attempt to get ahead of the curve on all-star games.
It’s Pro Bowl and NHL all-star weekend, and in these times of picking a side on every issue, these games generate a lot of negativity. These events, like the two in Orlando and St. Louis respectively this weekend, are criticized for a lack of competitiveness. Fan bitterness has actually led Major League Baseball to give the winning league home-field advantage for the World Series. That makes no sense.
These games are meant to be a celebration in sport. Television coverage lets us get to know the athletes better, and fans in host centres may get a chance to meet their favourite athletes at an event. These games aren’t meant to rival a championship game or a best-of-seven playoff series.
So please, if these events bother you so much, turn off your TV and stay off Twitter and Facebook. Get on with your day.
