Jason Friesen has announced his intention to run for mayor in the fall municipal election.
He considered a mayoral bid in 2012 but believes he’s better prepared to run now.
The courier driver and father told 650 CKOM one of his main platforms is putting more fun into Saskatoon.
“There are great things in the city right now but the city needs to expand more,” he said.
Friesen wants to bring back the city’s outdoor waterslide park.
“I remember Penguin Village when I was a kid,” he said with a laugh. “The city absolutely needs more fun in it.”
Fun and games aren’t Friesen’s only priorities. He wants to see more private investment and a free market which includes cutting smoking restrictions.
“I feel that government has no right dictating people’s bad habits — or any habits for that matter,” he said.
Also on his agenda — scrapping bike lanes and the upcoming organics program.
He’s the first to admit his ideas are controversial.
“I’m not going to pander or change my views,” Friesen said.
Mayor Charlie Clark told 650 CKOM he hasn’t ruled out running for re-election but would discuss it with his family before making a decision.
The Saskatoon municipal election is scheduled for Nov. 9.
