Saskatoon students are heading back outside for recess after being stuck inside during last week’s cold spell.
Sutherland School’s physical education teacher, Jen Buettner said having recess outdoors again is good news for the students, along with teachers.
“Fresh air is great for adults [and] kids. It does wonders for mental health and the ability to get some Vitamin D from the sun,” she said.
“Kids being cooped up is not good for anybody, even for teachers. It plays on our mental health as well, so anytime we can get outside is great.”
Buettner said the school has good programs set up to keep the kids active when they have to have indoor recess, but the kids were still excited to get back outside.
“They were ready for this fresh snow, they were ready to make some tracks and of course sledding is always a popular activity. So as long as they are dressed properly, they are happy to get out,” she said.
Students also added that they were excited to get some time outdoors.
Henry, a grade one student at the school, said he likes to play cops and robbers sometimes at recess. He said his all-time favourite activity is sledding on the schoolyards small hill.
Simply put, he said it’s his favourite activity because “you can go really fast on sleds.”
