Only in the CFL would the introduction of team ownership be so unscripted and unique.
On Monday, commissioner Randy Ambrosie introduced Sid Spiegel and Gary Stern as the new owners of the Montreal Alouettes. Spiegel, the president of Ontario-based Crawford Steel, wasn’t at the announcement, while Stern — Crawford’s CEO — admitted he was quite nervous about public speaking and speaking to reporters.
That’s interesting, as Stern will be the team’s governor. He admitted that he had never seen the stadium where the Alouettes play before purchasing the team, and also at one point said “the Argos suck.” He said it in fun as he is good friends with Dale Lastman of MLSE, but it was still an awkward moment as Stern was seated beside the commissioner.
I have no questions about Ambrosie’s due diligence during this process. Spiegel and Stern are successful businessmen, and may very well be the owners that get the Alouettes franchise turned around competitively and financially.
Here’s hoping endeavours go better than Monday’s announcement.
