The WHL’s Regina Pats opened a string of three games in three days with a 7-5 loss to the host Swift Current Broncos on Friday.
The Broncos, who had posted just one victory in their previous 12 games, built up leads of 5-1 and 6-2 in Friday’s contest before Regina rallied.
The Pats cut the deficit to 6-5 with 6:15 left in the third period, but couldn’t get the equalizer. Swift Current’s Hayden Ostir sealed the outcome with an empty-net goal with 31 seconds left in regulation time.
Jaxan Kaluski scored twice for the Broncos, who got their other goals from Cole Nagy, Tyler Smithies, Ethan Regnier and Sam McGinley.
Regnier also had three assists, McGinley added two assists and Kasper Puutio recorded three helpers for Swift Current (8-24-1-2), which had three power-play goals and one shorthanded tally.
Zack Smith, Kyle Walker, Drew Englot, Jan Cikhart and Austin Pratt had goals for Regina (11-20-3-1), which got two assists apiece from Tyson Feist and Cole Dubinsky.
Max Paddock started in goal for the Pats and gave up six goals on 21 shots over two periods. Donovan Buskey stopped all three shots he faced in the third.
Swift Current’s Isaac Poulter made 44 saves.
The teams are to meet again Saturday, 7 p.m., at the Brandt Centre.
Regina is to complete its busy weekend Sunday, when the Brandon Wheat Kings are to visit the Brandt Centre. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
