Every year the Friendship Inn on 20th Street in Saskatoon hosts a full Christmas lunch for those in the community that are in need of a warm meal or just somewhere to spend Christmas day.
According to executive director of the inn, Sandra Kary, this is a meaningful event for some of the Friendship Inn’s regulars.
“I think it’s really special to the folks that come to the Inn. We do serve our meal right on the exact day of Christmas so if there are folks that haven’t been able to connect with family or friends throughout the season this is the place that those folks come if they haven’t another place to go,” she said.
“So I think it is really important that we are offering that meal on the actual day of Christmas. It’s really a special time.”
She said the lunch-time meal will be the full Christmas spread including turkey, potatoes, carrots, stuffing, salad and dessert. They are preparing to serve upwards of 1000 people.
According to Kary, they have around 40 volunteers coming out to help serve the meal, including some of their regulars as well as some people that come out every year on Christmas day.
“There is just a really special, warm spirit in the building when you are coming on the actual Christmas day to really be together and be a community together,” she said.
“I want to give a big thank you to everyone that has been contributing and helping us out with all of our December preparations. This is our 50th anniversary year so we are hoping to close off the year with a great turkey dinner celebration on Christmas day then head into the new year.”
