Halifax regional council continues to lower my confidence that we’ll see a 10th CFL franchise.
The Schooners Sports and Entertainment group has done nothing but bend its proposal to make it more appealing to a very cold council when it comes to putting public money into a stadium.
The stadium has been scaled down to bare bones with a price tag of less than half what Regina spent on Mosaic Stadium.
The city then scaled back further its financial commitment to $20 million for the $110-million stadium.
And the plan still only got 10 of 17 votes to approve the funding. But at least it’s moving forward.
But why the skepticism in Halifax? The economic impact on a region for one Grey Cup is over $50 million and what about the businesses around game day or the major concerts the region could bring in?
Yes, I’m not in Halifax nor a taxpayer there, but with a population larger than Regina and a near no-risk proposal, I’m left baffled council just barely passed what appeared to be a no-brainer decision.
