Sports needs more players like Nathan MacKinnon.
He’s only — and let me state I mean only due to the fact others of his ability make almost double what he does — making $6.3 million per season as he left a load of cash on the table to sign a long-term deal and build a team around his ability.
When his contract is up in a few years he admits he’d do it all again to keep a deep team that has a chance to win.
While I’m sure the NHL Players Association would rather see stars make huge money to keep raising the bar, for some players there are more things than just money. Championships and a Stanley Cup are the ultimate prizes. Players want to do what’s best for the team to get there.
In the era of the selfish, millionaire hockey player narrative, MacKinnon is a refreshing change. Though when his current deal actually ends, we’ll see if he actually leaves all that money on the table again.
I hope so.
