The Estevan Police Service is to conduct an external investigation at the request of the Saskatchewan RCMP in the wake of a recent arrest on the Cote First Nation.
According to a media release from the RCMP, officers from the Kamsack detachment responded to the First Nation on Thursday at about 4 p.m., for a report of a woman being held against her will in her home.
When they arrived, the Mounties spoke to the woman through an open window. After she opened a door to let them into the house, a man left via an open window.
The RCMP media release said the man “was known to police and was wanted on several outstanding charges under the Criminal Code.”
Officers told the man he was under arrest, but he ran off. One of the Mounties was able to catch the man after a brief chase and tackled him on ground the RCMP said “was icy and very slippery at the time of the arrest.”
As a result, the man suffered a head injury. He was taken to hospital for treatment and is in stable condition.
The 34-year-old man was charged with resisting arrest in connection with the incident.
On Friday, the Saskatchewan RCMP asked the provincial Ministry of Justice to appoint an independent observer to examine the incident. The Estevan Police Service was asked to investigate the circumstances of the arrest.
