A young woman has had to shut down her recycling business in Outlook, after the town council voted to bring in Loraas Disposal to do the work.
More than seven years ago Taylor Layton began collecting her neighbours’ recycling, and her business grew from there.
Taylor even won an award for entrepreneurs with disabilities while running “Taylor’s Recycling Pick-Up” in Outlook.
Taylor’s mother, Eloise Layton, said they have heard the cost of running the town’s depot was getting too expensive, and that’s where Taylor did her sorting.
“Many people have reached out to me as Taylor’s customers, and even not, and they said, had they known, and since we have to pay this extra fee now, they said they would rather pay it to go to the depot and keep those jobs, and also keep Taylor in business, than to pay it to have someone from the city come in,” said Layton.
Layton said they came up with the idea of the recycling business because Taylor was having trouble finding a job. She said Taylor always loved recycling at home, so they thought they would give it a try as a business. Layton said they’re not sure what they will do next, but it won’t be starting another business.
“She’s very sad. She doesn’t really understand why. She has taken it personally of course. She has asked me many times why people don’t like her business anymore, or why she was fired. She was very proud of her job and her business. It’s been a blow for sure.”
650 CKOM reached out to the Town of Outlook, but hadn’t received a response as of this publishing.
