New B.C. Lions head coach Rick Campbell needs to take some steps to ensure that his 34-year-old quarterback, Mike Reilly, stays healthy in 2020.
B.C.’s pass protection improved when Kelly Bates arrived as offensive line coach in 2019, but a very valuable commodity still took a pounding.
The offensive scheme under 2019 offensive co-ordinator Jarious Jackson was not only ineffective at times, but dangerous.
It’s up to Campbell to fix that.
Lions general manager Ed Hervey, who has a Grey Cup ring as a GM, will also have to have his best off-season as a team manager.
B.C. lacked talent in several positions on both sides of the ball, and in all three phases of the game, in losing 13 contests last season.
There is a very healthy list of free agents and Hervey has to land his share.
The Campbell hiring is a step in the right direction.
However, much more has to be done from the managerial department if the Lions hope to not be that lone western team not to make the playoffs again in 2020.
