30 – The Council of the Federation is meeting this morning in Mississauga, Ontario, with Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe chairing. As the premiers meet, national unity will be top-of-mind, but is there anything the premiers can do to help repair the relationship between Ottawa and the western provinces? What should the premiers be aiming to accomplish? To help answer these questions, John is joined by Alberta-based political scientist Duane Bratt.
00 – The Hour of the Big Stories… Open Session
00 – A small Saskatchewan newspaper is looking for a new owner to take over operations when their current owner retires at the end of the year. The Davidson Leader has been in business for more than 115 years and still makes a profit, circulating to more than 1,500 readers in the communities of Davidson, Craik, Kenaston, Hanley, and the surrounding rural areas. Owner/publisher Tara de Ryk is hoping to find someone passionate about the town and local journalism to take over on Jan. 1, 2020. Here’s the catch: She only wants $1 for the historic paper, and they’re going to select the new owner based on an essay competition. de Ryk joins Gormley now to discuss the essay competition, her more than two decades in local Saskatchewan journalism, and the importance of local news.
00 – Retailers in Saskatchewan (and Canada) are feeling the effects of showrooming, according to a CFIB survey. Showrooming is when consumers try out products in-store and then purchase them online. Give us a call at 1-877-332-8255 and tell us your thoughts.
00 – Is Canada losing trust in its governments and institutions? With the nation divided in our recent federal election, many in the west aren’t trusting the federal government. Former Governor General David Johnston’s 2018 book “Trust” explores the importance of trust in Canada’s success, and offers twenty ways to build a better country by making ourselves, our institutions, and our organizations more trustworthy. Johnston joins Gormley now to discuss how we can repair that damaged trust.
