There are only two reactions to have to Curling Canada’s major funding announcement over the weekend:
- Duh
- It’s about time
Curling Canada announced that the women’s and men’s money winners at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts and Tim Hortons Brier will make the same amount of cash.
Many women weren’t even looking for equal pay; they were looking for a closer gap. Last year, $70,000 went to men’s champ Kevin Koe with women’s champ Chelsea Carey’s rink pocketing $32,000.
The finalists’ pay at the Scotties was also less than half the men’s — $50,000 to $24,000.
It’s interesting that the women drew better TV ratings than the men in the playoffs and the final.
Even male curlers saw the discrepancy as a problem, knowing the play and competition is top notch at both national championships.
On the curling tour, when the men and women are playing at the same event on the same week, they make equal pay.
It’s nice to see Curling Canada listened to its athletes and made the obvious change.
