Drivers in Saskatoon and much of central Saskatchewan will likely need extra time in planning their morning commutes Friday.
At least 5 centimetres of snow fell on the city overnight (2 inches) according to early estimates from Environment Canada.
“It can make roads slick. And if you have ice (already) on the roads, the light snow seems to polish it quite nicely,” said meteorologist Brad Vrolijk.
The city had six high speed plows, 24 graders and 10 sanders clearing the snow and applying sand and salt on major roads.
The powdery snow doesn’t need much wind to start blowing around. Vorlijk said it won’t be a major issue for people the highways today.
“Fortunately not too bad. We’re looking at winds out of the southeast today at around 20 kilometres gusting to 40. You might see a bit of drifting snow, but probably not blowing snow,” he said.
Over the next 24 hours, he forecasted variable cloud and off an on light snow during the day.
By early next week, the weather office is predicting above average temperatures.
