The Saskatoon Farmers’ Market has found its new location.
Members of the cooperative voted in favour to secure the lease for 2600 Koyl Avenue.
The next step in the process is finalizing the move with farmer’s market board of directors late next week to “pursue an executed lease” with Fortress Properties, a media release issued Saturday said.
The release stated the group’s service to the people of Saskatoon is important. With many variables to consider, the farmers’ market was “practically limited by affordability.”
Executive director Erika Quiring thinks Saturday’s move is a positive sign.
“The Saskatoon Farmer’s Market continues strong, morale amongst vendors is high, and the SFM is thriving like never before. This is due to the hard work of the board of directors and the membership. We have explored many options for alternate locations and feel that the Koyl Avenue facility will serve well towards the cooperative’s goals,” Quiring said in the media release.
President Adi Ramachadran echoed those sentiments of the new site located near the Saskatoon International Airport.
“The next 10 years and beyond have immense potential,” Ramachandran said. “We are committed to continue our vision and mission in Saskatoon, and the Saskatoon Farmers’ Market will continue to be the authentic farmers’ market in Saskatoon that the residents of Saskatoon and the producers of the region desire and deserve. After we transition and grow to a dedicated facility, we look forward to establishing satellite farmers’ markets in pedestrian-friendly core areas as well.”
The 44-year-old cooperative is made up of more than 100 members. That largest farmers’ market in Saskatchewan has been under considerable scrutiny from Saskatoon city council as pressure from the city to open the market’s current location up to six days a week increased.
Currently, the farmers’ market is open on Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesdays.
