While Craig Dickenson, Jeremy O’Day and Cody Fajardo have definitely put a stamp on this 2019 Roughriders team, how much credit should go in the direction of Cleveland Browns senior defensive assistant Chris Jones?
The plan when Jones arrived was to have sustained success in Saskatchewan. And Jones delivered an improved 10-win team in Year 2 and an improved 12-win team in Year 3 before bolting to the NFL.
Jones brought in a lot of the player personnel people and the coaching staff that was mostly retained by Dickenson. Jones also heavily promoted Jason Shivers to run the defence.
Oh, and then there are players like Shaq Evans, Kyran Moore, Derrick Moncrief, Mike Edem, Cam Judge, Ed Gainey, Nick Marshall, Loucheiz Purifoy and Charleston Hughes that Jones recruited, drafted or signed as free agents.
Yes, O’Day has done a bang-up job bolstering this team and finding the new franchise QB in Fajardo.
But the grunt work put in by Jones to make this team a perennial contender shouldn’t be forgotten as we near the West Division final, no matter how much you hated him for the way he left.
