A former Fas Gas employee in Saskatoon, who was accused of spying on customers with a cell phone hidden in the ceiling, has pleaded guilty to attempted voyeurism.
Adnan Iqbal, 25, received a 15-month suspended sentence Tuesday morning at Saskatoon Provincial Court, with 10 conditions.
Iqbal, who appeared in court with a translator said, he was “very sorry for his actions.”
The incident stems from a complaint on September 1, when a woman posted to Facebook, pictures of a cell phone in ceiling tiles in the washroom at the Fas Gas location on Circle Drive.
Iqbal was initially suspended by the company and later fired.
The agreed statement of facts read in court said Iqbal entered the women’s washroom just prior to the customers, who had stopped to fill up and a bathroom break while passing through the city on their way home to Manitoba.
The victims, a woman and four girls between the ages of eight and 15, can’t be named due to a publication ban.
The judge accepted a joint submission from the lawyers who noted, investigators were never able to recover a video of the alleged bathroom recording, but determined a file was deleted from Iqbal’s iPhone before his arrest and was never distributed.
The crown noted, while the incident was an invasion of privacy, Iqbal had no prior criminal record and was not a threat to the community.
His conditions include, no contact with the victims, attend counselling and do 30 hours of community service work to be completed within the next 12 months.
He must also surrender to police searches up to 3 times per year, and hand over any electronic recording device when requested.
