The University of Calgary Dinos completed its quest for revenge with a 29-4 win over the Saskatchewan Huskies in the 83rd Hardy Cup final at McMahon Stadium Saturday.
Calgary won in a rematch of last season’s 43-18 upset loss at the hands of the Huskies.
The Dinos have now won 18 Hardy Cups, the championship awarded to the winner of the Canada West, including nine in the past 12 seasons.
An exciting first half of football was shown on every category of the box score except for touchdowns.
Both teams couldn’t find the endzone as the both Dinos and Huskies found ways to squander red zone opportunities.
Dinos backup quarterback Josiah Joseph fumbled the ball on a goal-line plunge in the second quarter just two players after a touchdown pass to Tyson Philpot fell narrowly incomplete.
The Huskies didn’t fair any better in its scoring attempts. Huskies quarterback Mason Nyhusthrew an interception on the Dinos 25-yard line and then fumbled inside the 15-yard line a few drives later.
Calgary’s only points came on two high snaps from the Huskies offence that were kicked out of the back of the end zone.
Saskatchewan’s scoring woes continued until the final play of the second half when a third down gamble from the second-yard line fell incomplete to end the first half in a 4-1 Calgary lead.
The Dinos scored the first touchdown of the game during its first drive of the second half on a deep ball from Sinagra to Philpot.
Joseph opened the fourth quarter by making amends for his fumble by scoring on an identical plunge after he was forced into the game following a Sinagra injury during his lone touchdown pass.
As Saskatchewan struggled to move the ball in the second half with successive two-and-outs, Calgary was able to maintain possession and run down the clock on the Huskies season.
Jospeh added a final touchdown run with seven seconds remaining in the game to seal a 29-4 victory.
Calgary advances to the Mitchell Bowl to play the McMaster Marauders next week.
McMaster defeated the defending Vanier Cup champion Western Mustangs 29-15 in the Yates Cup.
