People in Saskatchewan started their week with an early taste of winter.
Environment Canada meteorologist Mike Russo said that, as of Monday morning, Regina saw about two centimetres of snowfall over the weekend. Saskatoon saw about five centimetres of accumulation.
“The system itself will move off into Manitoba today. However, the air mass is quite unstable coming behind it so we are expecting periods of snow to continue throughout the bulk of the day today. (We) could see a few more centimetres falling in Regina today,” Russo says.
In the morning, Highway Hotline indicated winter driving conditions on commuter roads all across central and southern Saskatchewan.
Russo said the skies should clear by Wednesday but the temperature will be cold, with a daytime high of -6 C.
Overnight lows in Regina and Saskatoon will be in the negative double-digits, he says. As a result, don’t expect the snow to melt too soon.
“It should hang around. We will see some slightly milder temperatures as we get into the latter portion of the week. But still those temperatures are going to be remaining below normal,” Russo said.
The seasonal daytime high for this time of year should be 5 C, he added.
Daytime temperatures are not forecast to rise above freezing until Thursday.
