A transformer shorting out is to blame for a power outage in the downtown central district, and the evacuation of the Midtown Plaza.
The Saskatoon Police confirmed the shorted out transformer was the cause of the issues.
When the transformer shorted out, wiring inside the parkade’s electrical vault caught on fire.
The small fire caused by the transformer behind Midtown and TCU Place created heavy smoke in the parkade, alerting emergency services.
Saskatoon Fire Department Battalion Chief Rob Hogan said the damage is substantial.
“We’re off scene now, and it’s up to (Midtown Plaza) to do the repairs. I don’t know how long that’s going to take them.”
As of 7:55 p.m. Monday, Saskatoon Service Alerts said on their website that full power had been restored across the city.
