Royal University Hospital (RUH) has a lot of space to work with.
The emergency and maternity wards were recently moved to the new Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital.
The move freed up around 115,000 square feet. That’s one and a half times the size of a football field.
Derek Miller, the Executive Director of Infrastructure Management for the Saskatchewan Health Authority, told Brent Loucks that they already have some plans ready.
“The first one is the mental health assessment unit… it is now becoming a permanent mental health short stay unit,” he said.
He explained that it will have seven beds. Patients will be able to stay for up to a week.
The hospital is also working on a 36 bed acute care unit.
“This will be for patients who are admitted through the emergency department as they wait (to be located) to another unit in the hospital.”
In the meantime, a temporary 22 bed unit is being used for the same purpose.
The next step for RUH is to update the master plan and think of how the rest of the space can be used.
Miller is looking forward to how this can improve healthcare.
“It certainly provides a lot of opportunities for us, for planning future health services.”
