The Washington Nationals are the latest example of what makes sports great.
When Bryce Harper signed with Philadelphia, many were of the mind that the Nationals were doomed.
In May, Washington had a record of 19-31. Many thought it was time for manager Dave Martinez to go. Throw in the fact that the bullpen isn’t one of the strongest in the majors, and you have a team that many dismissed as a contender.
Remember the St. Louis Blues’ run to the Stanley Cup last summer? There are some similarities.
Thanks to some great pitching from Stephen Strasburg, and some great batting from players such as Juan Soto and Ryan Zimmerman, it’s the Nationals, and not the 106-win Dodgers, who are representing the National League in the World Series. The Nats needed to beat Milwaukee in a one-game showdown and overcome a 2-1 deficit in a best-of-five divisional series against L.A. to get to this point.
Mission accomplished.
To see “Wild Card Washington” advance to the Fall Classic is great for baseball and great for sports fans.
