The Washington Nationals, once named the Montreal Expos, are in the World Series.
I know for hardened Expos fans this may be a more bitter moment than sweet, but for those who followed the franchise to Washington, it’s a moment they’ve long waited for.
The Expos came oh so close in 1981, losing 2-1 in Game 5 of the NLCS to the L.A. Dodgers. It’s known as Blue Monday thanks to Rick Monday’s ninth-inning home run.
Then in 1994, the league cancelled the season with the Expos in first place in the National League East and looking like a team that could easily go the distance.
The team packed up and moved to Washington after the 2004 season.
This year, 50 years after the franchise came to be, the Nationals honoured their past by donning the baby blue of the Expos’ original uniforms with the Expos logo and all. It was a whole lot of nostalgia for Expos fans who yearn for the day baseball returns to Montreal.
And maybe it was a sign it could be a magical season for a franchise that has gone through more than enough to deserve its first title, 50 years in the making.
