8:30 – Is Alberta Premier Jason Kenney in provincial or federal politics? It can be a bit hard to tell these days, as the premier has been calling for a change of federal leadership and even traveled to Ontario to help the Conservative campaign. Meanwhile in Saskatchewan, Premier Scott Moe has never been shy about the frosty relationship between his government and the federal Liberals or his membership in the Conservative Party of Canada, but has not directly joined in the campaign efforts or made an endorsement. Duane Bratt, professor of political science at Mount Royal University, joins Gormley now to discuss provincial leaders’ participation in the campaign and whether he thinks the federal election could impact national unity as Premier Kenney has indicated.

9:00 – Bug’s Day: The HOUR OF RAGE!
10:00 – A new report from the Fraser Institute showed that despite our high spending on healthcare, Canada has the longest wait times among developed countries with universal healthcare coverage. The study, headed by Bacchus Barua, compared 28 universal healthcare systems and also found Canada ranks 26th (out of 28 countries) for the number of doctors (2.8 per 1,000 people) and 26th (out of 27) for the number of hospital beds (2.0 per 1,000 people). Barua says Canadian policymakers should learn from more successful countries with universal healthcare, and he joins John now to discuss some of the issues he identified and how Canada can work to improve.

11:00 – Today is World Mental Health Day, and mental health issues will affect almost all Canadians at some point in their lives, whether directly or indirectly. According to the CMHA, one in five Canadians will experience a mental health problem or issue during any given year, and by age 40 half of the population will have or have had a mental illness. Tragically, many mental health issues still lead to suicide, which accounts for a quarter of all deaths among 15-24-year-olds and 16% of all deaths among people aged 25-44. We think the best way to fight the stigma around mental illness is to talk about it, so we’re inviting our listeners to speak up and share their stories. How has mental health affected your life?
