The Toronto Argonauts continue to be in a no-win situation.
While the team was introducing Michael “Pinball” Clemons as GM on Tuesday, I logged on to Sportsnet.ca. The site did have a sidebar headline from a Canadian Press story that said Jim Popp was out and Pinball was in.
However, the lead story on the site was about how Kasperi Kapanen’s struggles highlight Zach Hyman’s importance to the Maple Leafs.
I realize that TSN is the league’s broadcasting partner and Sportsnet is not, but can you imagine how all media outlets would have had lead stories online and on air had the Leafs or Raptors fired a GM and hired another one?
This has gone on in Toronto for a long time. Today’s events out of Toronto are newsworthy. A professional franchise in that city fired one general manager and hired another one. Yet, that age-old indifference in Canada’s biggest market to the Canadian game sadly has a tight grip on that market.
