Jordan Ames-Sinclair, 19, Regina.
Tell us about yourself
I am an Indigenous youth from Zagime Anishinabek First Nations. I have been involved with politics and the Liberal Party of Canada since I was 14 years old. I have previously sat on the Metis Nation Legislative Assembly and the Metis Nation of Saskatchewan Provincial Youth Board.
What’s a little-known fact about you?
I am a fraternal twin.
Why should voters hire you?
I believe that I can be a voice for the diversity that the riding desperately needs. Too often constituents are only represented in bunches, instead of as a whole. I will strive to take the voice of Regina-Qu’Appelle to Ottawa.
Who should we call for a reference?
Anybody I have worked with in the community. I have always striven to have a great work ethic and to be understanding of people.
What is your greatest strength? What is your greatest weakness?
Strength: My ability to connect with people of all backgrounds and to understand their needs. Weakness: The need to micromanage everything.
Where do you stand on:
Gun laws? I believe that gun laws should be a balance between crime prevention and an individual citizen’s rights. There should be common sense laws that are applicable to downtown metropolitan cities, but also would not infringe on a hunter’s rights on the Prairies. The Liberal plan to allow individual cities to ban certain types of guns is the correct one. It allows the cities to address their unique crime problems, without infringing on the rights of others.
The need for more pipelines? Pipelines are the safest way to transport oil to market. They limit the environmental impact while still getting our resources to the world. Every pipeline comes with its own unique challenges, and that is why I believe strongly that thorough environmental impact studies and community consultations are needed.
Western alienation? I believe that western alienation is a state of mind that comes from the feeling that Ottawa is disconnected from the West. This is why, as your Member of Parliament, I promise to have a strong presence in the riding, and have an open-door policy that any constituent can share their concerns. I also promise to take those concerns to Ottawa.
China? What should our approach be with some of our markets blocked? I believe that a strong and positive direction has been set. With a recently named ambassador, Dominic Barton, a new direction is under way. China’s approval of him has broken new ground in diplomatic relations, and shows positive signs of improved diplomatic relations. Canada must use its strong leadership to get our resources to the world market.
Are we facing a climate change crisis? Is carbon tax the answer? Yes, we are most definitely facing a climate crisis. The Saskatchewan Court of Appeals listed that: 1. Climate change is real; 2. It is caused by human activity; 3. It is an existential threat; 4. Carbon tax is not a tax, and many more. I believe that the carbon tax and pollution pricing is a positive step to changing the behaviour of Canadians to become more conscious of climate change. But it isn’t everything; with the carbon tax there needs to be environmental policy like banning single-use plastics, investments into clean technology, and green energy which are all in the Liberals’ platform to tackle the climate crisis.
It’s a day off and you can do anything you want. What would it be?
I would have to say for a day in winter I would stay inside and read a good book. For spring and summer I would go outside for a hike or the beach.
Who inspires you?
All of the people I meet and connect with on a daily basis.
What is your hidden talent?
Playing the trombone or jigging — but that’s not hidden.
What do you wish you could do but can’t?
Play piano.
Who are the three people, dead or alive, that you would love to have dinner with?
Elon Musk, Michelle Obama and Margaret Thatcher.
How do you take your coffee?
Black.
What’s the one album you’d take with you on a desert island? What embarrassing song do you admit to on your playlist?
The Hamilton Soundtrack. I really enjoy music and the artistry that goes into it, so I have no embarrassing songs.
What is your guilty pleasure?
McDonalds.
What is the last book you read?
Becoming, by Michelle Obama.
What is your favourite TV show? What are you binge watching?
I simply couldn’t decide. I’m too busy to binge watch anything.
What is your all-time favourite movie?
Anything Disney.
