City council has approved a report that will see a few changes to Saskatoon’s recycling program beginning in 2020.
One of those changes is the monthly fee of the program. The cost to use your blue bin in 2020 will be going up to between $7 and $7.50 a month from the current $5.66.
Russ Munro, Director of Water and Waste Operations for the city, said the changes are due to the changing market for recyclable materials.
“Because the markets are down, and so some of that cost is reflected into the price we pay per month.”
Another change you’ll see is what can be recycled. Two more items have been added to the list of what you will no longer be able to toss in your blue bin. Black plastics and polycoat containers will no longer be part of the program in the new year. Disposable coffee cups are one example of a polycoat container, and black plastics include coffee cup lids and some meat and produce trays.
“Unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of options for recycling those materials,” said Munro. “Some of those materials are going to wind up as waste.”
The city’s contract with Loraas expires at the end of this year. Negotiations are taking place for the new recycling contract which will begin Jan. 1.
