As the Pleasant Hill neighbourhood deals with an increase in violent crime St. Paul’s Hospital is looking to improve safety at its facility.
“We’ve certainly seen a spike in violent crime in the neighbourhood in March of this year and again in late June-early July,” St. Paul’s Executive Director Karen Barber told 650 CKOM.
Last spring an assessment of the 20th Street facility determined the rotunda structure at the front entrance should be removed to improve sightlines—which was done last fall, according to the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA).
The next step is for the SHA and hospital to figure out the redesign.
“Priorities are going to be around safety and security, around traffic flow, accessibility drop-off and pick-up areas,” Barber said. “We really want to improve the access we want to make this as welcoming and safe an area as it can be.”
The health authority has put out a request for proposal for ideas.
“Looking for input from the community, the public, from our staff, patients and families and that will take some time,” Barbar explained.
She expects it will be a multi-year process once they get feedback and see options for improvements.
In an email, the SHA said it’s important to take time to do this right.
