Jamie Nye’s conversation with National Hockey League commissioner Gary Bettman includes discussion of Olympic participation from NHL players. Bettman has stated, time and time again, that the Olympics are disruptive to the league’s season.
The NHL is a business, and Bettman is employed by his owners to make money. Shutting the doors for two weeks in February when playoff races are heating up doesn’t make sense, unless the league can generate lost money from, or with the help of, the International Olympic Committee.
NHL star Sidney Crosby provided the world with one of the greatest hockey moments in 2010 in Vancouver, and I get the sense that the league didn’t get the financial benefit that they should have.
It continues to make more sense for the NHL to play through in February, stage it’s own World Cup of Hockey, and leave the Olympic men’s hockey to other players from around the world.
