There are few things finer in sports than the irony of a team losing a big-name free agent and then doing just as well or better without them.
The Washington Nationals were Bryce Harper’s team. He was the guy that made the headlines and hit the home runs and won the awards.
He split this off-season to Philadelphia and, wouldn’t you know it, the Nationals clinched a playoff spot and eliminated the Phillies by beating them twice on Tuesday.
The New York Islanders had the same issue when John Tavares bolted to Toronto. They had some players have career years and a coach who gave them a system for success and the Islanders looked just fine without Tavares.
And in the CFL the Eskimos look like they’re set for the playoffs while Mike Reilly will be on the outside looking in with the B.C. Lions.
These three most recent examples hammer home the aspect of ‘team.’ It takes more than one high-priced superstar to get the job done. Just ask Connor McDavid.
