Saskatoon police are investigating after a woman was shot downtown Saturday afternoon.
In a media release, police said officers were called to the 300 block of 5th Avenue North around 1:30 p.m.
When they arrived, officers found a 23-year-old woman had been injured.
Brendan Butler lives on the seventh floor of the condo building across the street. Him and his cousin ran to the window once they realized the banging sounds they heard might be gunshots.
“I saw the shooter run, and he ducked behind the building and ran,” he said.
According to Butler, he heard at least six shots that were fired through a back window and rear passenger window of a car that was attempting to leave a parkade of a condo building at 320 5th Avenue.
“It was spaced out — Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom,” he said. “I used to live in Dallas for a while, so I heard shots down there, but I just thought it was something else.”
Police did not report any other injuries at the scene, while Butler said a male driver of the car escaped unharmed.
The injured woman was taken to hospital with undisclosed injuries as Saskatoon police’s Criminal Investigations Unit continues to investigate.
A shooting across the street hasn’t shaken Butler’s confidence in his neighbourhood, but it has surprised him.
“It’s just kind of shocking that it’s Saskatoon,” Butler said. “It’s just weird isn’t it?”
