I’d be OK if the Houston Astros remained among the American League’s elite for a long time.
I say that knowing it can get tiresome to see the same teams in any sport win over and over again. It seems like either the Yankees and/or Red Sox are at the top of the American League East standings all the time. (Remember, this is coming from a disgruntled Blue Jays fan.)
As the Astros won their 100th game on Wednesday night, I couldn’t help but think that this team is not only talented but likeable.
A.J. Hinch, who has spent the past five seasons as manager, has done a terrific job of using one of baseball’s best lineups. Gerrit Cole, who reached the 300-strikeout mark for the season, is part of a solid rotation that also includes Zack Greinke. Two years ago, when the Astros won the World Series, I was one of the many who just couldn’t get enough of how 5-foot-6 Jose Altuve played above his weight.
The Astros won it all two years ago and last year they won 103 games. This year, when the Astros are in the thick of it again, I’ll be on board.
