Kavis Reed’s autograph still adorns our radio station’s hallway, a section called the Wall of Fame, right beside Ron Lancaster.
“My hero,” Kavis said while signing about 16 months ago. Reed was then the Montreal Alouettes’ general manager. We enjoyed his visit because Kavis is a pretty nice guy, but even then we thought he was over-matched in his job. He was signing bad players and coaches, forced to promote neophyte Khari Jones to head coach after firing Mike Sherman. And after the CFL assumed ownership of the financially-strapped Als, the league pushed him out amid stories he was improperly handling the salary cap.
Yet here come the Alouettes, basically with the roster Reed assembled. With a firm belief in Jones and strong play from quarterback Vernon Adams Jr., who several CFL teams had given up on, the Als surprisingly have a 6-4 record and sit second in the East. They’re coming to play Saskatchewan on Saturday, hoping to avenge a weather-shortened, 17-10 loss to the visiting Roughriders last month. Reed won’t get credit, but his name should linger awhile.
