A potash exporting company announced a donation program with the Saskatoon Food Bank on Monday.
Canpotex could donate up to $50,000 to the non-profit organization.
They’ll be matching every dollar of community donations up to that point, potentially bringing in $100,000.
Laurie O’Connor, the charity’s executive director, said the awareness this campaign brings is just as important as the money.
“It’s important for people in the community to understand the work that we do, and to understand the reasons that folks are having to turn to food bank services,” she told 650 CKOM.
She said food security is a serious problem in Saskatoon.
“We have around 20,000 people each month using our programs, and about 43% of those are children,” she explained.
“For us, that’s not acceptable.”
The organization plans to use the money generated from the Canpotex partnership to buy milk for children and nursing mothers in need.
Ken Seytz, president and CEO of Canpotex, said these donations line up with his company’s core values.
“We export potash, fertilizer, all over the world. So, food security is at the heart of everything we do,” he said.
“With our headquarters here in Saskatoon, we’re concerned about food security at home as well.”
This marks the third year of partnership between Canpotex and the Saskatoon Food Bank.
