Rolling out your blue bin could cost more for property owners in Saskatoon in the New Year.
A city report indicates rates for the curbside recycling program will increase from $5.66 per month to at least $7 by next year.
Russ Munro, the Director of Waste and Water Operation for the city of Saskatoon, says that’s because of the soft market for recycled materials.
“One of the biggest impacts is the paper market,” said Munro. “It’s dropped almost 40 percent as far as value goes. There isn’t that cost recovery on the back end of the contract which is why across the country , certainly across western Canada, we’re seeing those increased prices for recycling programs.”
The report also highlights three primary options to the recycling program, including cutting back on accepted materials like beverage cups and black plastics.
The city is in the last year of its contract with Lorras. Munro says they’ve narrowed the bidding process down to a likely proponent.
On Monday the recommendation to make the changes passed and will now go before council.
Last year, grocery bags and plastic wrap were axed from blue bins and the city set-up a pilot program with SARCAN for glass containers.
