The Labour Day long weekend is the last long weekend of summer and the last weekend for many students before heading back to class.
SGI is taking notice.
“September is dedicated to back to school,” SGI spokesperson Scott McGregor said. “Law enforcement will be out conducting targetted enforcement to ensure our school zones are as safe as possible.”
In Saskatoon, 30 kilometre per hour school zones go back into effect for the school year on Monday, despite it being Labour Day.
In Regina, McGregor suggests drivers pay close attention to the posted speed in the school zones as it is going for 40 km/h to 30 km/h starting Sunday. That’s in effect 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. all year-round.
“Some kids are going to school for the first time so they may not have learned how to cross the street properly,” McGregor said about why slowing down is important. “We want drivers to be on the lookout.”
The rules in school zones, including the speed limit and when it’s in effect, vary between cities in Saskatchewan.
During the 2018-2019 school year, SGI cameras recorded 9,934 violations in Saskatoon school zones and 12,285 in Regina.
