West Wind Aviation has announced it supports calls for provincial funding for improvements at the Fond du Lac airport.
The Chief of the Fond du Lac Denesuline First Nation, Louie Mercredi, said the airport is in poor condition and the runway needs to be expanded.
According to West Wind, the runways at the Fond du Lac and Wollaston airports are shorter than other northern runways.
“If the runway was lengthened by just 1,200 feet and widened, it would greatly improve the ability for all carriers to serve these growing northern communities with larger aircraft needed to meet the demand,” said West Wind Aviation President and CEO, Michael Rodyniuk, in a press release.
The money that was to go toward the improvements is currently tied up in a dispute with the province.
The province says the First Nation didn’t complete an application for the funding, and now it’s not a priority this budget year.
West Wind Aviation is a First Nations- and employee-owned airline that flies into remote northern communities in Saskatchewan.
