Motorists will be getting a bit of a break for a few weeks as Saskatoon is getting new red light cameras.
But, don’t get excited. The city is swapping out all the cameras, as it’s found a new vendor, which it says will save some money in the long run.
Tuesday morning, the cameras at 51st St. and Warman Road were taken down, as were the ones at Preston Ave. and 8th St.
The five year contract with the current vendor ended this summer. The city is moving to a new vendor, and now all the infrastructure owned by the former service provider has to be removed.
This will also include the red light cameras at 33rd St. and Idylwyld Drive, and at Ave. C. and Circle Drive.
The city says the new vendor, Conduit, will be installing their equipment from mid-October to mid-November.
The down time is expected to cost the city between $200 to $300 thousand in lost violation fines, but Jay Magus, the Director of Transportation says they expect to see savings of $900 thousand over the contract term.
