The CFL’s video replay system was on full display this weekend when the Montreal Alouettes downed the Calgary Stampeders in double overtime.
Calgary coach Dave Dickenson said what many are thinking. What is the role of the command centre? What is the standard? And what are they seeing that fans, players and coaches are not?
The standard was made clear before the season that the only calls that should be overturned are clear and obvious errors. But it doesn’t appear that standard is being applied 100 per cent of the time.
So here is my proposal to the CFL. Rip off the now-defunct Alliance of American Football’s idea. The video judge is on camera, on mic and fans can watch the replays and hear why the decision was made by the person who makes it.
Giving fans more access to these controversial decisions might make them a little less controversial.
Get rid of the live mics on the players and put them on the officials.
Maybe then we’ll all have a better clue on what the heck is going on when games are being decided back in an office in Toronto.
