Saskatoon’s Royal University Hospital (RUH) has extended the hours for children’s emergency services to 24 hours a day.
The new services began on August 1, and will continue until the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital (JPCH) is completed.
Previously, the services were available from 8 a.m. to midnight daily at RUH.
Dr. Ron Siemens is a pediatric emergency room physician at RUH, and he said these new hours will give children and their parents a clear indication on the next steps they need to ensure the right care.
“This gives us opportunities to observe children for periods of time where we don’t have to admit them,” Dr. Siemens said Tuesday, “We’re able to give them clear guidelines on where to go next. It’s going to make things a lot smoother, and will help all services in the hospital.”
They’ve already brought in new physicians for the extended services, and plan to bring in more in the future.
Corey Miller is the Vice President of Provincial Programs with the Saskatchewan Health Authority.
He said this is going to give them the ability to make the transition into the new JPCH a lot smoother, especially for staff.
“Today is really a milestone that we’re excited about.. It allows our teams to get orientated with this new 24 hour structure for two months, before we move into the new building.”
