So Weston Dressler is ready for retirement.
The story in his hometown newspaper from Bismark, N.D. has the scoop that Dressler’s 11-year CFL career is over.
When I think of Dressler, I think of those big catches in his rookie season, the 2013 Grey Cup and his chemistry with quarterback Darian Durant. It was one of the best QB-receiver combos in Riders history.
Yes, he wowed on game day, but what made Dressler special was his work between games. I’ve never seen a player work harder or expect more of himself in practice during Dressler’s time or since he left, or should I say was forced out by Chris Jones in 2016.
He’d dive for passes, he’d be fuming over drops. Dressler’s compete level was higher than anyone else’s, even at ping pong and video games.
It’s likely why he played so much bigger than what his genetics allowed him to be. You can’t measure heart or will and Dressler made up for any lack of size with those intangibles.
I’m not a big fan of one-day contracts, but I’d put aside that opinion for Dressler to properly retire a Rider, though the Plaza of Honour induction dinner should be three years away.
