If you were out enjoying the weather on the August long weekend, you may have noticed something missing.
You likely weren’t constantly swatting at mosquitoes.
While the mosquito numbers are below the 10-year average, they are starting to pick up after all the stormy, wet weather Saskatoon has seen.
City entomologist, Jeff Boone, says while the wet weather means great conditions for the larva to develop, it’s not great for the adult mosquitoes.
The stormy, unstable weather the area has been experiencing causes the mosquitoes to be inactive.
“They like a lot of rain, but then they like hot, humid, stable conditions for flying and seeking out a host for a blood meal,” said Boone.
The city is also starting to see some of the mosquitoes that carry the West Nile virus in it’s traps, but the numbers are very low.
“Right now we don’t have any mosquitoes that have tested positive for West Nile in the province.”
