The Toronto Argos, and for that matter the CFL, can’t afford this.
The Argos are 0 and 6 after a 26-0 loss to Edmonton on Thursday.
The team is in a market that is only interested when they win the Grey Cup.
When the team flounders like this, it is even more out of sight, out of mind.
The team, owned by the very affluent Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment Group, has trouble getting a foothold where the Leafs, and now the Raptors rule.
The biggest city in Canada has, for some time, been the least loyal to an exclusive Canadian league.
Add to the mix, a team that hasn’t got a quarterback talented enough to compete and a weak roster at other skilled positions, and indifference from sports fans hits an all time high.
The Argos will never generate the same interest as the NHL or NBA teams in the centre of Canada’s universe, but if this continues this is a team that may be even more of an afterthought than it already is.
