A charity car auction in the village of Parkside is generating some controversy.
The Parkside Community Club runs a demolition derby every year. This year, they’re donating the proceeds to the Canadian Mental Health Association.
They’re selling a replica of the General Lee, the car from The Dukes of Hazzard, to raise funds.
The car has a Confederate Flag design on the roof.
Premier Scott Moe has received criticism for a tweet featuring the vehicle.
Every yr the Parkside Community Club puts on a demolition derby raising $ to put back into Parkside & surrounding communities
Recently a charity car auction has been added: in 2018 the Lightning McQueen benefitted @STARSambulance & on 7/27 the General Lee will benefit @CMHA_SK pic.twitter.com/9QT4Odj6bI

Read the room Mr. Premier. This has long now been recognized as a symbol of hate.
The fact that this tweet hasn’t been deleted or appropriately been responded to speaks volumes.

Kerry Peterson is the spokesperson for the demolition derby. He told Gormley they had good intentions when designing the car.
“I invited the naysayers out to our derby to see the spirit the car was built (in)… (If they did,) they would see that there’s no racism involved whatsoever,” he said.
He said he didn’t even think the vehicle could be seen as racist.
“I was a big Dukes of Hazzard fan, I didn’t even realize the Confederate flag was on the roof of that car.”
Peterson issued a challenge to critics of his club.
“Talk’s cheap. Come on out, bring your cheque book, and paint it yourself if (you) feel that strongly,” he said.
The Mental Health Association apologized for the situation, and said it made it’s position clear on the situation, releasing a 5-minute video explanation.
