If you’ve noticed that you’ve been slapping those pesky mosquitoes more often in recent days, you are not alone.
City of Saskatoon entomologist, Jeff Boone, says we went from very low numbers in traps earlier in the season to well over 100 mosquitoes recently found in one trap.
Boone says the recent wet weather is to blame.
He also says the stormy weather we’ve been experiencing at night is affecting the counts, because mosquitoes are not generally active during wet conditions.
That means there may be less of the pests being caught in the traps some nights.
Right now Saskatoon is seeing what are known as ‘nuisance’ mosquitoes and not the culex tarsalis mosquitoes that carry the West Nile virus.
The arrival of the culex tarsalis mosquitoes is inevitable but a bit behind this year due to the very dry, then very wet weather.
Boone adds, you can do your part to help battle the mosquito numbers by removing any standing water on your property.
