Tomas Terfloth has been saving for years to make a purchase that’s truly Canadian.
On Thursday, he purchased a canoe at $776.99 — taxes in — with only Canadian Tire money.

He didn’t do it alone, though. He received a large donation from friends, family, and others who watched it gain traction online.
“It started as a joke on the Internet,” he said. “I never intended to buy a canoe with Canadian Tire money, but I made a joke about doing it, and people really liked it and wanted to help.”
He said it was mainly donations, and he was presented with the cash at his 40th birthday in early June.
Cashier Linda Smith, who has been at Canadian Tire for five years, said she has never seen anything like this before.
“I didn’t know what to do; I was not expecting that at all,” Smith said. “I pressed the wrong button on the till and everything. I have never seen that.”
They counted up to $941, with a majority of the 10-cent bills to go before they decided to just finish the purchase at $776.99.
Terfloth already knows when he will be using the canoe for the first time.
“Tomorrow at Emma Lake,” he said.
What a good kickoff to Canada Day, eh?
